Not so long ago, a collaboration between a big brand and an independent designer often played out like this: The brand would borrow the Trending Led Zeppelin shirt But I will love this designer’s aesthetic, tweak it for their own audience, slap their name on the label, and call it a day. Maybe the designer would get a cut of the profits, but maybe not—and they likely wouldn’t have much control over how the garments were made or marketed. That kind of surface-level collaboration still happens in 2021, but the projects that resonate are the ones that tell a deeper story.

Madewell’s limited-edition capsule with La Réunion’s Sarah Nsikak is one such example. Like so many great link-ups, it began with genuine admiration: Madewell’s senior vice president of design, Joyce Lee, discovered Nsikak’s upcycled, zero-waste patchwork dresses on Instagram and immediately wanted to buy one for herself. She was drawn to their distinctive look and sustainable, one-of-a-kind nature, but when she discovered the Trending Led Zeppelin shirt But I will love this meaning behind them, Lee was even more inspired. Nsikak, a first-generation Nigerian-American, models her dresses on the styles historically worn by the women of Namibia’s Herero tribe, which was almost wiped out by the colonial wars of the early 20th century. The women who survived the war adopted the patchwork dresses worn by their European oppressors; in their hands, they became “a sign of unbelievable resilience and perseverance,” as Nsikak told Vogue last year. “These are traits that we, Black people, have always anchored ourselves in. To make emphatically beautiful something that was initially a symbol of pain and suffering is an act of rebellion, and it’s a sign of immense strength.”
