If anyone is qualified to helm a podcast about the Witch And Moon My Broom Broke So I Became A Middle School Teacher Halloween Shirt But I will love this beautiful, sometimes messy art of queer dating, it’s probably Christina Tucker and Drew Gregory. The pair originally met as writers for the website Autostraddle, where Tucker writes about everything from Grey’s Anatomy to work-friendly-yet-dazzlingly-gay style, and Gregory interviews LGBTQ+ luminaries like Mae Martin and Daniela Sea (and occasionally expounds upon the joy of giving poppers to cis women). There’s no question that queer dating can be confusing, often leading the parties involved to ask themselves, “Okay, we spent eight hours together the first time we met. Are we dating, or are we best friends?” That’s where Tucker and Gregory’s new podcast, Wait, Is This a Date?, comes in; together, they talk to a wide array of guests about everything from the etiquette around hooking up with friends’ exes to best practices for Instagram flirting. Vogue recently spoke to Tucker and Gregory about the origins of their podcast, their feelings on long-distance queer relationships, the importance of clear communication in dating, and, of course, their astrological signs. Read the full interview below.
Drew Gregory: I am sitting on the Witch And Moon My Broom Broke So I Became A Middle School Teacher Halloween Shirt But I will love this bed of someone who I was virtually dating through pretty much most of the pandemic and finally met last week. Gregory: I’m in Toronto, and the border was closed, so we were casually flirting on Instagram for the first year. But then, starting in like March of this year, we started FaceTiming and fully sort of dating—except we had not met, which isn’t usually my style. We couldn’t meet at first, but then the border opened on August 9. Talk about “Is this a date?” ! This brings up an important question: Did you both see the story about the guy who traveled 650 miles **to meet a woman he met on TikTok, and then all of the queers being like, ‘Yeah, it’s called dating’? Gregory: I like the casual, low-stakes quality of having people all over the world to flirt with, so I think in some ways, it’s a little bit of a defense mechanism. But I think when something really clicks and is really right, you know. I don’t know that many straight people, but the few straight people I do know have been like, “You haven’t met the person? It’s not real.” Not that physical chemistry isn’t different than talking, but I just feel like queer people have a different take on things. I was pretty sure that this person was worth driving 500 miles for, and if not, I [get to] see Toronto! It’s an adventure.
