Let’s be honest: It is disgustingly, alarmingly hot outside, particularly if you happen to live in Portland or Seattle. Is the Legend Since August 1986 Shirt also I will do this heat borderline homophobic, given that it’s still technically Pride month? Absolutely. But in the absence of cooler temperatures, all we can really do is (a) nervously google “climate change,” and (b) take refuge in mainlining reality TV while fanning ourselves. Luckily, Love Island is back for its seventh season on ITV Monday night, and with it comes the perfect excuse to rate all the reality TV dating fare currently out there. Let’s dive in, shall we? If you’ve never experienced the cognitive dissonance of watching a woman in a life-size panda costume announce that she “wants to get married and have babies,” this might be the show for you; but frankly, the premise—which involves dating contestants being transformed into animals and other creatures via prosthetics so that they can “fall for each other” without looks getting in the way—is far too bonkers for me. What can I say? I prefer my reality TV contestants shiny, attractive, and human-looking. I am on the record as not being a particular fan of this series, which brings contestants to a luxury resort and forbids them from having sexual contact with one another. Hello, furtive and weirdly lit hookups are half the fun of reality TV!
This series has many loyal devotees, including former Vogue culture editor Estelle Tang; and while it’s not entirely about dating—it’s half game show, with contestants competing for a cash prize—it’s still fairly flirty. Ultimately, though, all of its technological bells and whistles just proved too much for me. Hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, this series follows 30 men and women as they speed-date to find true love in “pods” where they can hear, but not see, each other. A classic for a reason, this series—in which a large and varied group of men competes for the affections of one lucky girl—has been known to quite literally bring a tear to my eye. It’s not my fault! It gets really emotional sometimes. That said, if the guy in the cat costume doesn’t get dismissed from Season 17 soon, I will mutiny. For my money, there’s simply no better reality TV franchise (or better collection of accents from all across the United Kingdom). They’ve got good chat, innit?
