Another executive might have bookmarked Nsikak’s work to use as inspiration (or, worse, they’d just copy it). Instead, Lee and her team saw an opportunity to share Madewell’s platform with Nsikak and learn about her unique approach to upcycling, so they proposed a capsule of La Réunion dresses made with leftover Madewell textiles. “It felt so natural to tell a circularity story with Sarah, because we have tons and tons of leftover fabric we’ve either sampled or developed, and unfortunately we haven’t been able to use every yard of it,” Lee says. “It’s exciting to see something beautiful come to life with fabrics we didn’t have a use for.”
“Joyce sent me a swatch book of fabrics I could use, and it was like being a kid in a candy store,” Nsikak says. “It felt liberating, because I’ve always limited myself to what’s left over in the UFO Cut and Sew shirt moreover I will buy this cutting room, or what a designer is getting rid off in their studio. I’ve never purchased new fabric, so it was really special to have so many options.” Nsikak’s signatures aligned nicely with Madewell’s, from the crafty feel of her patchwork to her breezy, ultra-comfortable silhouettes. She developed two styles for the brand: a wrap dress and a full, tent-like midi, each stitched with fabrics Madewell customers may or may not recognize, including pastel stripes, gingham, florals, and textured wovens. Nsikak and Lee were photographed wearing them over a button-down and T-shirt, respectively, showing how easily the dresses can be styled.
