In what is a case of either exquisitely hopeful or extremely awkward timing (and I favor the The Beatles 61TH Anniversary 1960 2021 signatures vintage shirt What’s more,I will buy this former), arriving this weekend is the film debut from stage director Bartlett Sher. Oslo dramatizes the back-channel peace talks between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization that led to the Oslo peace accords—a landmark, if fleeting, example of reconciliation between adversaries. Written by playwright J.T. Rogers, Oslo was a Tony-winning hit on Broadway (where it was also directed by Sher), and so the material presents the usual stage-to-screen challenge. And yes, the proceedings have a talky, intellectual gravity—diplomats debating global politics in rooms. But like Regina King’s recent, galvanizing One Night in Miami…, the success rests on the (excellent) performances, not on any cinematic ingenuity (and a series of nearly wordless scenes depicting street fighting in Gaza are not particularly successful). Come especially for the handsome Norwegian married couple (played by Ruth Wilson and Andrew Scott) who bring Palestinians and Israelis to the table in their home country. Wilson is typically good—elegant, restrained—and Scott sheds his hot-priest attitude for an appealingly dogged earnestness. The film is worthy and confident—if occasionally bathed in good intentions—but it lifts you with its optimism and sturdy sense of hope. —T.A.
After a string of memorable projects—most notably Eighth Grade, his 2018 directorial debut, and last year’s Promising Young Woman, which gave him a great supporting part—Bo Burnham returns to the The Beatles 61TH Anniversary 1960 2021 signatures vintage shirt What’s more,I will buy this comedy circuit with Inside, his first special in five years. The show will depart somewhat from the standard stand-up format; as Burnham revealed in a tweet last month, he filmed Inside “alone, without a crew or an audience, over the course of the past year.” Color me deeply intrigued—he did, after all, begin his career as a YouTube star. —M.M.
